Apple owns 50% of the US smartphone market, Samsung and LG are far behind

Apple continues to hold a high place in the ranking of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, despite the fact that its phones are by far among the most affordable. A large part of the sales, however, are made in its country of origin, in the USA, where Apple seems to still own almost half of the smartphone market. The US mobile phone sales report released by Canalys for the second quarter of 2020 once again demonstrates how strong the iPhone brand is in the US.

The market is declining, but Apple has seen an increase in sales

In the second quarter of 2020, 31.9 million smartphones were sold on the US market. This number is a decrease of 5% compared to the same period last year, but an increase of 11% compared to the previous quarter. Apple continues to lead the US phone market, with Samsung in a distant 2nd place, while manufacturers such as LG, Lenovo and TCL stand out with percentages below 10% of the total.

The company that had the most to gain in the last quarter was, of course, Apple, which thanks to the launch of the iPhone SE, enjoyed an increase in sales. If last year in the same period it delivered 13.6 million units for 40.8% of the market, in 2020 it managed to deliver 15 million for 47.1% of the market. The highest sales were again for the iPhone 11, which managed to surpass even the sales of the iPhone XR from the same period last year by 15%, which was the best-selling phone at the time.

Samsung delivered a much smaller number of phones in the US in Q2 2020. In fact, its sales are half that of Apple: 7.4 million units for 23.2% of the phone market. The company stagnated compared to last year, when it sold the same number of units and still had about 22.3% of the market. Its most popular models were the Galaxy A10e and A20.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th places are a long way from the two giants

LG is in third place, with 3.5 million units delivered, so half of Samsung, for 11% of the market. Compared to last year, when it had 13% with 4.3 million units, LG decreased by 19 percent. However, Lenovo, present on the market with the Motorola brand, managed to increase to 6.9% market share with 2.2 million units sold, compared to 2 million last year. Finally, TCL is the fifth-ranked company, down 43% from last year: 1.3 million units sold for 4% of the market.

Other companies delivered another 2.4 million units to fill the last 7-8 percent of the market. The average price of a smartphone in the US in Q2 2020 was $ 503, 10% lower than in the same period of 2019. The reason could be the orientation of users towards cheaper models, as the new flagships with Android with 5G are very expensive, while iPhone SE and iPhone 11 are the cheapest and most popular iPhones, cheaper and than last year’s iPhone XR models.
